Regional Forum on the ECOWAS Solar Energy Initiative (ESEI)
The 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS endorsed a special resolution on the establishment of the ECOWAS Solar Energy Initative (ESEI) and the ECOWAS Solar Commission (ESC) as its steering mechanism. The initiative has the objective to develop large-scale solar plants to supply the regions energy needs. The enhanced deployment of solar technologies should ensure reliable and affordable energy as a complementary source for meeting West Africa’s energy needs.
Under the Chairmanship of H.E. Me Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, ECREEE has been designated the implementing agency for the ESC. As a first implementing step the Commission will hold a Regional Forum on the ECOWAS Solar Energy Initiative – ESEI from 18th to 21st October 2010 in Dakar, Senegal.
The Forum will:
- Officially launch the ECOWAS Solar Energy Initiative – ESEI
- inaugurate the ECOWAS Solar Commission (ESC)
- adopt a road map for large-scale deployment of solar energy in West Africa
